THE SYNOPSIS. . .

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING BRAVE AND BEING FEARLESS. One requires you to carry on despite the fear; the other is the noticeable absence of it.

𝐀𝐍 𝐄𝐗𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐋𝐄
Max Mayfield is brave. Jessie Salvador is fearless.
(This will be explained further on in the book.)

Growing up in the small, judgmental town of Hawkins, Indiana, it was easy to paint a target on your back. Everyone knew everyone and secrets never lasted very long especially when you were the one sharing them. In a community of predominantly white, Christian and straight families, the Salvadors were strikingly different.

As one of the few openly-practicing (as the conservative families liked to say) members of the LGBTQ community in Hawkins, many of the children her age were told to 'stay away from that Salvador girl.' Several even went so far as to call her loony, thinking that there was something not quite... right in her head (they weren't wrong.) She couldn't blame them, really, as she'd been the one to out herself at Emily's third birthday party.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇
Jessie was not, in fact, a lunatic.
She could be a wonderfully sensible person most of the time.
In the one percent off-chance that her streak of madness would make its appearance, a telltale gleam would shine in her eyes as she embarked on her newest risk.

Her social isolation wasn't solely her fault, either. Her mother had decided to not pay any attention to the rules of pregnancy during the nine months her daughter had been growing inside of her and as a result, there was another stigma added to her already precarious position. Rather than facing these difficulties, Jessie preferred to stick to the outskirts of proper civilization and make her own observations. As the only person in Hawkins who went looking for danger, it was only a matter of time before she became involved with the scandals and cover-up of what happened at Hawkins' lab. With the town in denial, Jessie is one of the few willing to face the truth.

    While my Loki book, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, was the first to include LGBTQ representation, this will be the first one that has it as a focal point. That being said, this is the 80s and there was not much in the way of acceptance. Although I will not be including direct references to homophobia/racism (e.g. slurs) as I find them unnecessary in fanfiction, it
will be implied.

    If this makes you uncomfortable in any way, I'm going to have to ask that you find another book to read. I'm trying to make it a point to include more diversity as there's really no excuse not to. If any comments are negative towards this book because of these themes, you WILL be blocked & reported.
